Hardwood care is mostly finish care. You are cleaning and protecting the coating on top of the wood. Keep it damp rather than wet, use a pH neutral cleaner and get the grit off the floor first. These guides from our Jackson team cover safe cleaning, protecting the finish and everyday care for wood floors.

Most hardwood damage we see in Jackson homes is slow. Grit gets walked across the finish, water sits a little too long near a door or a dishwasher, and the floor gets cleaned with products never meant for wood. All three are avoidable.

These guides explain how to clean wood floors without harming the finish, how to protect it over the years and what a sensible routine looks like in a West Tennessee home, where humidity swings between summer and winter.

Every Hardwood Floor Care Guide

Each guide answers its question in the first paragraph, then explains the reasoning and states the limits.

  • How to Clean Hardwood Safely

How we clean hardwood in West Tennessee homes: lift the grit first, keep water off the seams and use only products made for a finished floor.

  • Protecting Hardwood Finishes

Why every hardwood care choice in a West Tennessee home is really about the coating on top, and what wears that coating out fastest.

  • Hardwood Maintenance Routine

The habits that keep a wood floor in a Jackson home looking its best, sorted by how often each one needs doing.

What does finish-safe hardwood cleaning mean?

Our hardwood cleaning is two steps. First we pre-spray a deep cleaner, or a stripping agent if the floor has store-bought polish built up on it. Then we recover it with a small extractor and finish with a neutralizing rinse. The solution does not sit on the floor long enough to get into the seams.

The floor is usually ready to walk on within 1 to 2 hours. Too much water, the wrong cleaner or a steam mop can cloud the finish and swell the seams, and cleaning cannot undo that.

What can hardwood cleaning not fix?

Cleaning removes soil, film and residue from the surface of the finish. It does not remove deep scratches or gouges. It does not lift pet stains that went through the finish into the wood. It does not repair cupping, water damage or spots where the finish has worn through to bare wood.

When the finish is dull and lightly scratched but still intact, a screen and recoat may be the right step, and we offer that. We do not sand floors to bare wood. If yours needs a full sand and refinish, we will tell you before any work starts.

Our guide to protecting hardwood finishes explains how to keep the finish whole. Questions about your floors? Call or text (731) 437-0006.

Common Questions

Can I use vinegar or a steam mop on hardwood?

We do not recommend either. Vinegar is acidic and dulls many finishes over time. Steam mops force heat and moisture into the seams between boards. A pH neutral hardwood cleaner used damp on a microfiber pad is the safer routine. Ask us when we are there and we will show you how damp is damp enough.

Does HydroClean refinish hardwood floors?

We offer screen and recoat for a finish that is dull but still intact. It is a different service from a cleaning. We do not sand floors to bare wood. If your floor needs a full sand and refinish, we will tell you when we look at it.

How long does hardwood take to dry after cleaning?

Hardwood is usually ready to walk on within 1 to 2 hours, the same as tile and stone. We recover the cleaner with a small extractor, so there is no long drying period like there is with carpet. We will tell you when rugs and furniture can go back.

Want us to look at it in person?

Call our Jackson team and ask, or send an estimate request. We collect the details, prepare your estimate, and schedule the work once you approve it. You get a chance to look at the work before we leave.
