Realistic Results, Honestly
We would rather set an honest expectation than make a promise we cannot keep.
- Cleaning is not refinishing. If the finish has worn thin in spots, ask about a screen and recoat. If it is worn through to bare wood across the floor, it needs a full sand and refinish. We do not do that work.
- Gray and black areas are stained wood. Water or urine got through the finish at some point. Cleaning does not reach it.
- Gaps between boards are normal on solid hardwood. They open and close with the seasons. Cleaning does not close them.
- Old floors wear unevenly. The walkways will not match the wood that sat under a rug or a sofa for twenty years, even when both are clean.

Solid Hardwood Cleaning Questions
Do I need cleaning or refinishing?
If the finish is intact and the floor is dull or hazy, cleaning is probably what you need. If the finish is worn off in the traffic areas, or boards are gray or black, it likely needs refinishing. The technician will tell you which when we look at it.
How do you deep clean old hardwood floors?
We check the finish first, because older floors are often waxed. Then we pre-spray a deep cleaner or a stripping agent, recover it with a small extractor and finish with a neutralizing rinse.
Can you make my old floor shine again?
If the shine is buried under residue, cleaning usually helps. If the finish itself has worn away, cleaning will not bring the shine back, because there is no finish left in those spots.
Will cleaning close the gaps between my boards?
No. The gaps come from the wood moving with the seasons. That is normal on a solid wood floor.
What about the dark ring where a plant sat?
That is water that went through the finish into the wood. Cleaning will not lift it. It would have to be sanded, and it may not come out all the way even then.
