Hardwood Floor Screen and Recoat in Jackson, TN
4.9 (278 reviews)2 min read
A screen and recoat is for a hardwood floor whose finish is worn but still intact. In Jackson and West Tennessee homes, HydroClean lightly abrades the existing finish and applies a fresh topcoat over it. No wood is sanded away. A floor worn through to bare wood needs a full sand and refinish, which we do not do.
A lot of tired wood floors do not need to be sanded. If the finish has gone thin and dull but has not worn through, a screen and recoat is usually the better job. We lightly abrade the finish that is there so a new coat has something to grip, then we put down a fresh topcoat.
No wood comes off the boards. That is why it works on engineered hardwood as well as solid, as long as the finish is sound. It is a smaller job than a full sand and refinish.
It only works when the old finish is in good enough shape for a new coat to bond to. The technician checks that first, and checks for store-bought polish or wax, because a new coat will not bond over either one. If the floor is worn to bare wood it needs a full sand and refinish. We do not sand floors to bare wood, and we will tell you if that is what yours needs.
We have to see the floor to price this one. Call (731) 437-0006 or send an estimate request and we will set a time to come look at it.

Our Process
Check the Finish
The technician checks that the existing finish is intact and looks for store-bought polish or wax on top of it. A new coat will not bond over polish or wax.
Screen the Finish
We lightly abrade the existing finish across the room. This gives the new coat a surface to grip. It does not take off wood.
Remove the Dust
Screening makes fine dust. It all has to come off the floor before coating, or it ends up trapped under the new finish.
Apply the Topcoat
A fresh topcoat goes down evenly over the screened finish and is left alone to cure.
Cure Time and a Look at the Floor
We tell you when you can walk on it and when rugs and furniture can go back. You get a chance to look at the floor before we leave.
What's Included
- A check that your floor is a candidate before any work starts
- A check for store-bought polish or wax
- Light abrasion of the existing finish
- Dust removal before coating
- A fresh topcoat
- Cure times for foot traffic, rugs and furniture
Realistic Results, Honestly
We would rather set an honest expectation than make a promise we cannot keep.
- A screen and recoat needs an intact finish to bond to. If the floor is worn through to bare wood in several places, it needs a full sand and refinish. We do not do that work, and we will tell you so.
- Deep scratches, gouges and dark stains in the wood stay. A new topcoat brings back the sheen. It does not fill damage or lift color that has soaked into a board.
- New finish will not bond over wax or store-bought polish. If either is on the floor, it has to come off first.
- The floor has to cure without traffic for the time we give you. Rugs or furniture put back early can mark the new coat.
Safe for Your Family and Pets
Keep children and pets off the floor while we work and until the new coat has cured for the time we give you. If someone in the house is sensitive to odors, tell us before the job so we can talk it through.
What Customers Say
“I recently had David and his crew work in my home. They were very nice and kept me posted on how they were working cleaning my floors. They cleaned and resealed my ceramic tiles and it has been unbelievable how colors came back.Really enjoy the new shine. They also cleaned some of my wood floors with same great results.Friends coming in always are stopped by the floor appearance. I definitely will recommend hydroclean and David's group.I will use them again.Great job!!”
Charles W. · Google review · July 2024 “Highly recommend Hydroclean! If you made the mistake of ever using a hardwood polish that uses an acrylic finish, these guys can come to the rescue. Our floors looked scratched and cloudy. We were contemplating getting all new floors because no amount of cleaning was making a difference. I knew the polish had to be removed. I thought I could do this on my own and after spending an entire day only to get about 100 square feet done, I knew I was in over my head. David and his crew were able to get the rest of my house finished in about 2 hours. My floors now look brand new.”

Wood Floor Screen and Recoat Questions
Is screen and recoat the same as refinishing?
No. Refinishing sands the old finish off, takes some wood with it and builds a new finish. A screen and recoat lightly abrades the finish that is there and adds a topcoat. No wood is removed.
What does a screen and recoat cost?
We do not post prices. Each floor is priced on its own, and on this job it depends on the size of the floor and the shape the finish is in. Call or send an estimate request and we will come look at it.
Will this work on engineered hardwood?
Often, yes. Engineered floors have a thin layer of real wood on top, so they cannot take much sanding. A recoat adds finish without taking wood off. The finish has to be intact, and we check that first.
What if my floor has polish or wax on it?
It has to come off before any new coat goes down, because new finish will not bond over it. The technician checks for it before recommending anything.
How do I know if my floor needs a recoat or a full sand?
If the finish is dull and worn but still covers the wood, a recoat is usually enough. If you can see bare or gray wood in the traffic areas, it likely needs a full sand. We will look at it and tell you which.
Wondering about cost? We do not post prices, but you can see what affects the price of hardwood floor cleaning.
