Most homes in Jackson and West Tennessee should have carpet professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Homes with children, pets or a lot of foot traffic need it more often, and many busy households book a spring and a fall cleaning. We look at how your carpet is wearing and suggest an interval that fits.
How often to clean carpet is one of the questions we hear most. It depends on who lives in the house and how the house gets used. A retired couple with a living room nobody sits in has very different carpet from a family of five with two dogs and a side door everybody uses.
For most homes, every 12 to 18 months is the right starting point. Below is what pulls a house in closer than that, so you can settle on a schedule that fits how you live.
What is the standard carpet cleaning frequency?
For most homes, professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months keeps carpet in good shape. Your vacuum handles loose surface soil between visits. It cannot reach the oily, sticky soil that works down to the base of the fiber and holds onto grit.
That deeper layer is what hot water extraction is for. We flush the fiber with hot water under pressure and vacuum it straight back out with the loosened soil. Done on schedule, that keeps grit from building up enough to dull the fiber for good.
A simple way to find your own number: have the carpet cleaned, then look hard at the traffic lanes a year later. If they already show, you are a once a year house, or sooner. If the carpet still looks good, you can go the full 18 months.
What changes how often your carpet needs cleaning?
Two things set the schedule: how much soil comes into the house, and how much of it gets ground into the carpet before it is removed. Almost every factor below is a version of one of those two.
- How many people live in the house, because foot traffic brings in the most soil.
- Pets, which add hair, dander, body oils, outdoor soil and the occasional accident.
- Small children, who play at floor level and spill more food and drink.
- Which doors the family uses, and whether shoes, from work boots to church shoes, come off at the door.
- Carpet color and pile, since light solid colors and cut pile show soil sooner than dense loop or patterned carpet.
- Whether the home sits on a gravel drive, near fields or close to construction, and how muddy the season is.
- Smoking indoors, how much cooking happens and how often the HVAC filters get changed.
- How often the carpet gets vacuumed, which matters more than most people expect.
How often should carpets be cleaned in a home with pets?
Homes with pets need cleaning more often than the 12 to 18 month guideline. How much more depends on the animals. A lot of pet owners settle on a spring and a fall cleaning for the main living areas. Pet hair traps soil, dander settles into the fiber and body oils rub onto the carpet wherever an animal sleeps or lies down.
Those oils are why a pet home can look clean and still smell lived in. A vacuum does not remove oil. Once oil is on the fiber, it grabs and holds dry soil. That is why pet homes tend to show dark, slightly greasy traffic paths sooner than homes without animals.
Accidents change the plan. Urine soaks past the fiber into the backing and pad, where it keeps reacting, so do not leave it for the next routine cleaning. If you know an accident happened, call about it now. Urine that reached the pad or subfloor is harder to deal with, and we cannot promise the odor will go completely.
How often do allergy sensitive homes need cleaning?
Households with allergy or asthma sufferers usually do better cleaning more often than the standard interval. Carpet works like a filter. It holds dust, pollen, pet dander and other fine particles out of the air until something disturbs them. That helps, but a filter only works while it still has room.
Regular extraction empties that filter. Between visits, a vacuum with a sealed, high efficiency filter removes the surface load. Professional cleaning removes what the vacuum cannot lift.
We are careful with claims here. Professional cleaning removes soil, dust and the particles that ride along with it, and you can see what came out in the recovery tank. It is not a medical treatment, and we do not quote removal percentages, because nobody has run lab tests in your home. If someone in the house has severe allergies or sensitivities, tell us. We have a hypoallergenic cleaner with no odor or perfume.
Does a carpet warranty require professional cleaning?
Many residential carpet warranties include a care clause. It often asks for professional hot water extraction at a set interval, commonly every 12 to 18 months, done by a qualified provider. Each manufacturer words this differently, so the paperwork that came with your carpet is the only reliable source.
If your carpet is still under warranty, two simple steps protect it. First, check the required interval and method in your own documents. Second, keep every invoice. A warranty claim is far easier when you can show a dated record of professional cleaning.
Hot water extraction is the method most manufacturers name, and it is the method we use on carpet. If you are not sure whether a cleaning will satisfy your warranty, ask us before you book and we will go over it with you.
What happens if you wait too long between cleanings?
Most soil in carpet is dry grit, and much of it is sharp. Every step presses that grit against the fiber. Over time the fiber surface scratches and stops reflecting light evenly. That is what you are seeing when a traffic lane looks worn.
The dark path from the door to the kitchen starts as soil, and cleaning removes soil. Left long enough, it becomes wear, and cleaning cannot remove wear because the fiber itself has changed. That lane may come out much cleaner and still look duller than the protected carpet beside it.
That is why we would rather keep a home on a sensible schedule than try to rescue worn carpet. When we look at your carpet before cleaning, we tell you which areas are soil and which are wear, so you know what to expect before we start.
What are the signs your carpet needs cleaning now?
If any of these apply, move your cleaning up instead of waiting for the calendar.
- Visible traffic lanes running between doorways, furniture and high use rooms.
- Carpet that feels crunchy, stiff or gritty underfoot instead of soft.
- A stale smell in the room that comes back after you air the house out.
- More sneezing, congestion or itchy eyes indoors than outdoors.
- Spots that come back a few days after you clean them yourself, which usually means wicking.
- A pet accident anywhere in the room, whether or not you can still see it.
- Getting ready to sell, list, move in or move out.
- It has been more than 18 months, or nobody remembers the last cleaning.
How do you stretch the time between professional cleanings?
The habits that keep carpet clean are simple. Vacuum the traffic lanes more often than the rest of the room, because that is where the soil is. Put a walk off mat at every outside door and clean the mats often, since a mat full of grit stops working. Ask for shoes off inside if your family will go along with it.
Blot spills right away with a clean white towel. Press rather than scrub, and work from the outside of the spot inward so it does not spread. Skip store spot removers with heavy detergents. They leave residue behind, and residue attracts soil. That is why a treated spot often comes back darker than the carpet around it.
Carpet protector applied after a professional cleaning also buys time. It gives you a little longer to blot a spill before it bonds to the fiber. It wears off in traffic areas and it does not make carpet stain proof, but on a family room or a stair runner it is worth having.
How does HydroClean help you set a schedule?
We have cleaned carpet across Jackson and West Tennessee since 2010. When we look over the carpet before cleaning, we can usually tell how the house is used, where the soil comes in and which rooms carry the load.
From there the advice is specific to your house. It might be the whole house every 12 to 18 months, with the traffic lanes and stairs cleaned in between. It might be the main floor once a year and the bedrooms every other visit. Cleaning rooms that do not need it is not a good use of your money, and we will say so.
Busy households often settle on spring and fall. We send a reminder card when you are coming due, and you book when you are ready. Our guide to how professional carpet cleaning works shows what happens at each visit. Questions about your floors? Call or text (731) 437-0006.
Questions About This Topic
How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?
Every 12 to 18 months for most homes. Clean more often if you have children, pets or heavy traffic. If the traffic lanes show before the year is up, that is your sign to move the next cleaning closer.
Is once a year enough for carpet cleaning?
For most households, yes. Our usual guidance is every 12 to 18 months, so once a year is on the careful side. Homes with pets, children or a lot of traffic are the exception, and those often do better with a spring and a fall cleaning.
How long do carpets take to dry after cleaning?
Allow about half a day, sometimes up to 24 hours. Airflow, humidity and how soiled the carpet was all play a part, and carpet dries faster in winter than in a humid summer. Running fans or your HVAC system speeds it up.
Does frequent cleaning damage carpet?
No. Hot water extraction done correctly is the method most carpet manufacturers name. What damages carpet is grit left in the fiber, too much water or leftover residue. That is why we rinse well and pull out as much water as we can on every pass.
Should I clean carpet before or after painting a room?
After. Painting brings dust, drips and traffic in and out of the room. Clean last, and the finished carpet stays finished. The same goes for any renovation work in the room, so tell us your project dates when you book.
