Preparing for a carpet cleaning appointment takes about fifteen minutes. We send a checklist 24 to 48 hours ahead. Pick up toys, clothes and anything else on the floor, and have the rooms open and available. Settle pets in a room we will not clean, and leave a parking spot near the door for our truck.

Preparing for a carpet cleaning appointment is simple, and you do not need to empty the house. We send a checklist 24 to 48 hours before the appointment, and it comes down to two things: pick up toys and clothes, and have the rooms open and available. Most families can do everything on this page in about fifteen minutes.

The other half is information. We can only treat what we know about, and pretreatment happens early. Two minutes of talk when we walk in, about the spot beside the couch or the accident in the hall, changes what we do for the next two hours. Ask us anything while we are there.

Why does preparation matter for carpet cleaning?

Preparation is not about making the house presentable for us. We have cleaned carpet in homes across Jackson and West Tennessee since 2010, and we have seen every kind of household. The point is practical. The wand needs a clear path across the floor, and every item we move by hand is time not spent on your carpet.

It also protects your things. A hose can catch small objects on the floor, and a hose pulled around a corner does not know what sits on the shelf beside it. Anything you move ahead of time is one less thing for either of us to worry about.

What should you do before we arrive?

Here is the whole list, a longer version of the checklist we send before the appointment. None of it takes long, and if you only have time for part of it, start with the floor and the pets. If something here is hard for you to manage, tell us when you book and we will plan around it.

  1. Vacuum the Main Traffic Areas

A pass over the traffic lanes the day before or the morning of removes loose surface soil. If you cannot get to it, do not worry. We pre vacuum every area as part of the job.

  2. Clear the Floor

Pick up toys, shoes, magazines, laundry, pet bowls, floor plants and anything else sitting on the carpet. An open floor is the most useful thing you can hand us when we walk in.

  3. Move Small and Fragile Items

Take breakables, collectibles, lamps and small decor off low furniture in the rooms being cleaned. Electronics, loose cords and anything with sentimental value are better moved by you than by us.

  4. Secure Pets in a Safe Room

Put cats and dogs in a room we are not cleaning, a crate, a fenced yard or a neighbor's house. Doors stay open and hoses run through the home during the appointment, so an anxious animal has an easy way out.

  5. Clear Parking and Hose Access

Leave a spot in the driveway or at the curb close to the door we will use, and unlock any gate we need to pass through. The hose runs from the truck into the house, so a shorter, clearer path means a faster appointment.

  6. Make a List of Problem Spots

Write down or photograph the spots that concern you, including anything you have already treated yourself and any pet accidents, even ones you can no longer see. Hand us the list when we arrive.

Should you vacuum before professional carpet cleaning?

Yes, if you can, though it is not required. Vacuuming removes the loose dry soil near the surface. That lets our traffic lane cleaner and hot water extraction go straight to the bonded soil a vacuum was never going to lift.

Slow passes matter more than many passes. Push the vacuum forward and pull it back deliberately, especially in traffic lanes and entry areas, so the brush has time to work the pile and the airflow has time to carry soil away. Two unhurried passes over the busiest strip of a room do more than ten quick ones across the whole floor.

If you cannot vacuum, or you ran out of time before we arrived, that is fine. We pre vacuum every area anyway, and we would much rather you keep the appointment than put it off.

What should you pick up off the floor?

Anything sitting directly on carpet needs to move, and anything small on a low surface in the room is worth moving too. Use this as a walk through list the evening before, room by room, so the morning of the appointment is not a scramble. A laundry basket carried from room to room makes short work of it.

  • Toys, shoes, laundry baskets, magazines and pet bowls.
  • Floor plants, decorative baskets and anything with a base that could mark damp carpet.
  • Loose cords, phone chargers and extension cables running across the carpet.
  • Breakables and collectibles on low shelves and side tables in the rooms being cleaned.
  • Small rugs and runners layered on top of the carpet, unless you would like those cleaned too.
  • Wastebaskets, floor lamps and anything else you would rather move yourself than have us handle.

What furniture does HydroClean move, and what stays in place?

We move furniture where it is needed, clean underneath and put it back, with blocks under the legs so damp carpet does not mark them. Dining chairs, small tables, ottomans and similar pieces are routine.

We do not move large, heavy furniture or anything that would have to be taken apart. That includes beds, large sectionals, china cabinets, pianos, aquariums, gun safes, televisions and entertainment centers. We clean up to and around them. Moving a loaded bookcase or a wall mounted screen risks damage to your property, and no cleaning result is worth that.

If you want the carpet under a heavy piece cleaned, have it moved before the appointment, and tell us when you book so we know that area is included. Carpet that has been covered for years often looks different from the rest of the room once it is uncovered, and that is worth knowing beforehand.

Where should pets and small children be during the visit?

The safest place for pets is a closed room we are not cleaning, a crate, a fenced yard or somewhere off the property. Outside doors stay open for the hose during the appointment, and equipment noise startles animals that are normally calm. An open door and a nervous dog are a bad combination.

If a pet has to stay inside, tell us which room they are in so nobody opens that door. Small children are best kept out of the rooms being cleaned as well, since hoses, damp carpet and equipment on the floor are easy to trip over.

Our products are tested and safe for homes, so the concern is not the chemistry. It is doors, hoses and moving equipment during the couple of hours we work in your home. Once the carpet is dry, in about half a day, sometimes up to 24 hours, the room is back to normal for everyone.

What does our team need outside your home?

The main thing is a parking spot close to the entrance we will use. Our hose runs from the truck into the house, so the shorter the run, the better the appointment goes. If you live in an apartment, a townhome or anywhere parking is tight, mention it when you book so we can plan for it.

Unlock gates, move vehicles out of the driveway, clear anything blocking the walkway and shift a trash can or a garden hose reel that sits in the path. If you have a security system or a dog loose in the yard, let us know before the day rather than at the door.

In winter, clearing ice from the walkway helps. In any season, tell us which door you would like us to use, so we are not running a hose across a freshly mopped kitchen. Details like that take one sentence when you book and are awkward to solve with our team standing on your porch.

Why should you point out problem spots in advance?

Because pretreatment happens early and it is targeted. A spot you show us before we start gets the right product and the right dwell time. A spot we notice halfway through the room gets less of both. Telling us where the trouble is takes thirty seconds and changes the result.

It also helps to know what has been tried. Store bought spot removers leave residue, and residue changes how we approach an area. If you scrubbed a spot with a drugstore product last month, tell us. We need to know, and nobody is going to judge you for it.

Pet accidents belong on the list even when there is nothing to see. Urine that soaked into the backing and pad needs a different approach than a surface spot. If you are not sure where the accidents happened, say that too. We check with a UV light and a moisture meter.

What happens once we arrive, and after we leave?

By the time we arrive, you have already approved the estimate, so the day starts with the carpet, not paperwork.

The walk-through comes first. We check the fiber, look at the spots you flagged and tell you what may not come out. Old dye loss, bleach spots and worn fiber will not respond to cleaning, and pet urine in the pad can remain. We do not always know what will come out, and we say so before we begin.

When we finish, you get a chance to look at the work while we are still there. Allow about half a day for the carpet to dry, sometimes up to 24 hours. Keep air moving, step carefully where carpet meets hard floor and wait until it is dry before furniture comes off the blocks.

Questions About This Topic

Do I need to move my furniture before carpet cleaning?

Not the ordinary pieces. We move furniture where needed, clean underneath and block the legs when it goes back. Large, heavy pieces, electronics and anything fragile stay in place, and we clean up to them. If you want the carpet under a bed, a piano or a large sectional cleaned, have it moved before the appointment.

Do I have to vacuum before the appointment?

It helps, but it is not required. We pre vacuum every area as part of the cleaning. If you have time, a pass over the traffic lanes removes loose surface soil and gives us a head start.

How long does a carpet cleaning appointment take?

It depends on the square footage, the soil and how much spot work the carpet needs. We can tell you roughly how long to plan for when we put your estimate together. A clear floor and a list of problem areas are the two things that keep a visit moving.

Can I stay home during the carpet cleaning?

Yes, and most people do. We only ask that pets stay secured and children stay out of the rooms being cleaned while hoses and equipment are on the floor. Please join us at the end to look over the work, so we can go through the result together.

When can I put my furniture back on the carpet?

Wait until the carpet is dry, about half a day, sometimes up to 24 hours. Setting wood or metal furniture legs on damp carpet can leave stains or rust marks. If a piece has to go back sooner, put protective tabs or foil under the legs.

Want Our Team to Look at Your Floors?

Send an estimate request and tell us what needs cleaning, which rooms and the rough sizes. For some services we can estimate by phone and set the final price when we see the floor. For others we book an in-home estimate.
