Area rugs are cleaned as textiles, so results depend on fiber, construction and dye stability. This page explains what rug cleaning realistically does and the fringe, dye and wear limits it cannot cross. It shows one of our own photos, a shag rug half cleaned. We have no matched before and after rug pairs yet.

A rug is not a loose piece of carpet. It is a textile with its own fiber, dyes, backing and often a handmade construction, and the right method depends on all four. That is why rug results vary so much, and why a photo of one rug tells you little about yours.

This gallery has one photo so far: a white shag rug half cleaned, with the cleaned side visibly brighter. We add rug photos and matched pairs as we take them. This page also explains what is realistic for the main rug types we see in West Tennessee homes.

The process is on the area rug cleaning and Oriental rug cleaning service pages.

Area Rugs Job Photos

Every photo here is our own work on a job in West Tennessee. Each caption says what the photo shows. These are our area rug photos.

What can you see in this gallery so far?

This gallery is early. Today it has one photo of our own, a shag rug half cleaned, with the cleaned side and the uncleaned side in the same frame. We would rather show a small set of our own than fill the page with stock photos of rugs we did not clean.

A rug can be photographed flat, from the same height, in the same light, before and after the same job, so matched pairs work well here.

What does a realistic area rug result look like?

On most synthetic and wool rugs in fair condition, cleaning removes embedded dry soil, oily film and the grayness that makes a pattern look muddy. Colors read clearly again, the pile stands up and odor carried in the soil leaves with it. On a dusty rug, the amount of dry soil that comes out before any water goes on surprises people.

Dye stability varies a great deal, especially in older handmade rugs, so we check the fiber and the dyes first. On a synthetic rug we choose the method after identifying the fiber. For Oriental and fine wool rugs, we arrange the cleaning through a partner in Memphis, Tennessee. Sometimes the gentler method gives a slightly less bright result. A rug that comes back a little less bright and fully intact is the right trade.

What can rug cleaning not fix?

Fringe is the most common disappointment. Cotton fringe on an older rug grays and frays with age and foot traffic, and cleaning brightens it only so far. Moth damage, dry rot in the foundation and old repairs are structural, not soil, and they need a rug restoration specialist.

Color problems do not reverse either. Sun fading along an edge that sat by a window, dye bleed from an old accident or a home cleaning attempt, and bleach spots are permanent changes to the fiber. Crushed pile in a walking path is wear, and worn fiber stays duller than the pile around it. Questions about your floors? Call or text (731) 437-0006.

Common Questions

How do you decide how to clean a rug?

By the fiber, the dyes and the condition. On a synthetic rug we identify the fiber and choose the method from that. Oriental and fine wool rugs are sensitive to strong cleaners, heat and dye bleed, so we arrange their cleaning through a partner in Memphis, Tennessee. We check the rug first and tell you which way it will go before any work is agreed.

Will an old Oriental rug look new again?

It will look clean, and on a dusty rug that is a real change. It will not look new, because age shows in the fringe, the pile height and the softening of the dyes, and none of that is soil.

Why are there so few photographs here?

We only publish rugs we cleaned. The set grows as we photograph more jobs. If a customer asks for no photos, we always honor that.
