Hardwood Floor Cleaning Results and What Changes

Hardwood results come from cleaning the finish, not the wood, so the change is in clarity and evenness rather than color. This page shows a matched before and after pair and our other hardwood photos, explains what our two-step cleaning does, and says when a floor needs a screen and recoat or full sanding instead.

Wood already looks good in a picture. The change a professional cleaning makes is mostly about how evenly light comes off the finish, and a camera and a room light can fake that in either direction.

What is on this page is HydroClean hardwood cleaning work. One matched pair shows the same dark hardwood floor before and after. This page also tells you what changes, what does not, and when a floor needs a screen and recoat or full sanding.

The method is on the hardwood floor cleaning service page.

Before and After

Every photo here is our own work on a job in West Tennessee. Each caption says what the photo shows. These are our hardwood photos. In each pair, both photos show the same floor or piece. One was taken before we cleaned it and one after.

What does this gallery show at the moment?

One matched pair of a dark hardwood floor, scuffed and dull before cleaning and with an even sheen after. The other photos show cherry and oak floors during and after cleaning.

A pair tells you more on wood than a single photo does, because room light can make any finish look better or worse than it is. We add more pairs as we photograph them.

What does finish-safe cleaning actually change?

What you walk on with a wood floor is the finish, not the wood. Over time that finish collects grit, kitchen grease, residue from household cleaners and a haze of store-bought polish, and the floor goes flat and streaky. Taking that off lets the finish reflect light evenly again.

Our process is two steps. We pre-spray a deep cleaner, or a stripping agent for store-bought polishes, and recover it with a small extractor. Then we finish with a neutralizing rinse. Hardwood is usually ready for use within 1 to 2 hours.

What needs a recoat or a full refinish instead of a cleaning?

Cleaning does not remove scratches or gouges, because they are cut into the finish and often into the wood. It does not lift pet stains that went through the finish into the grain. It does not fix cupping or water damage, and it does not restore spots where the finish has worn through to bare wood.

When the finish is dull and lightly worn but still intact, we offer a screen and recoat. Deep scratches, bare wood, stains in the grain and water damage need sanding to bare wood or board repair, which HydroClean does not do. We tell you which one your floor needs before any work starts. Common Questions

Why does the hardwood photograph not look dramatically different?

Because a maintained wood floor should not look dramatically different. Cleaning removes haze, grit and residue so light comes off the finish evenly. It is a change in clarity, not color. A dramatic hardwood change usually means sanding and refinishing.

Does HydroClean refinish hardwood floors?

We offer screen and recoat for a finish that is worn but still sound. We do not sand floors to bare wood. When a floor has deep scratches, bare spots or stains in the grain, we tell you that it needs a full refinish.

How soon can furniture go back?

After a cleaning, the floor is usually ready for foot traffic within 1 to 2 hours. We tell you before we leave if it needs longer. A screen and recoat has its own cure time, which we explain before the job.
